Who is coming in

Margaret Martin is an internal appointment in the fullest sense: she has been the district's Executive Director of Clinical Operations, the role that runs the hospitals day to day, and has been on the executive since joining ISLHD nine years ago. The district's own executive-team page, still showing the pre-transition line-up when we checked it this week, lists exactly that pairing: Mains as chief executive, Martin as Executive Director Clinical Operations.

Ms Mains' assessment of her successor, as reported when the change was announced: Her strength as a leader, together with her significant clinical and operational experience, will see her continue to drive our organisation forward.

What the outgoing CE's new job says about the district

Ms Mains leaves after 12 years that included the Black Summer bushfires and the COVID-19 pandemic, and, less visibly but more persistently, the gridlock NSW Health calls bed block: patients, many elderly or living with disability, who are medically ready to leave hospital but stay because no aged-care place or NDIS support is available. Her new role at the NSW Health Ministry is Aged Care and Disability Reform coordinator general, working with the federal government and other health districts to reduce exactly that number.

It's why I have made the decision to take up this new role and go where I think I can make the most difference, utilising the lessons and experiences of our District in recent years, she said of the move. Health Minister Ryan Park, who is also the local member for Keira and Minister for the Illawarra and the South Coast, paid tribute in a social media post: Margot Mains has been a truly remarkable leader of our local health district.

A note on sourcing, because it is the honest thing to do

As of 19 July, the district's own news channel has not published a release about the transition; its 2026 output to date is two measles alerts. The transition facts and quotes above were reported by Region Illawarra on 9 July 2026, with the photograph supplied by ISLHD itself, and the names and current roles are confirmed independently by ISLHD's own executive-team page. When the district or NSW Health publishes its own account, we will link it here.

What we will watch under the new CE

  • The New Shellharbour Hospital, the district's biggest capital change, expected complete in 2027, and the Warrawong Community Health Centre due this year, both covered in our project ledger.
  • The Wollongong Hospital and Health Precinct planning process, with its design team appointed in June and scope still to be determined.
  • Whether the bed-block numbers her predecessor now owns statewide begin to move, and what that looks like inside Wollongong and Shellharbour hospitals.
